Converting Calories into Historical Dates

At the Outback Steakhouse, Son began reading off the calorie count for items listed on the menu. Daughter began relating those numbers to dates she had learned about in her AP World History class. Son, taking American history chimed in with some relevant dates as well. This became quite comical: one because the calorie counts were so high on some items; and two, because between the two kids, they could come up with an historical event that corresponded to the calorie number.

Here are a couple examples (calorie > menu item > historical event)

  • 1765 > Sweet Adventure Sampler Trio > Stamp Act
  • 1804 > Teriyaki Filet Medallions > Thomas Jefferson is re-elected
  • 174 > Walk About Soup > Roman media is criticizing the government’s response to economic affairs
  • 2014 > Chocolate Chocolate Tower > When Daughter graduates from high school

Daughter says the upside to really unhealthy restaurants posting their calories is that it’s very entertaining.

  1. This cracked me up. Your boys’ acumen, and all of your senses of humor, are awesome (not in the slang meaning, either). I’ll never look at those calorie counts in quite the same way.
