I pre-ordered the Kindle version of W is for Wasted, the 23rd Alphabet series book by Sue Grafton, and hoped that it would be delivered at midnight EST. Many pre-ordered Kindle books come at 9pm PST so I can get a head start on reading them before they are “officially released.” I started checking my email at 9pm on 9/9 but was disappointed when it never showed up before I went to sleep. Upon awaking though, it was queued up.
After consuming the 22 previous books about Kinsey Millhone and Santa Barbara’s alter ego Santa Teresa, reading a new story is like slipping on a comfortable pair of sweats. I happily read the newest adventure while comparing all of the parallel locations in Santa Barbara.
The basic story is that there are 2 murders and how they are connected. Topics of homelessness and research “trimming” at UCST (aka UCSB) move the story along. Kinsey, once thought of as an orphan, finds a whole set of distant relatives in Bakersfield. I’ve never been to Bakersfield, but I wonder if she makes a parallel landscape there as she does with Santa Barbara.
Every good mystery takes place on three planes – what really happened; what appears to have happened; and how the sleuth…figures out which is which”
I enjoyed following Kinsey on these three planes and look forward to “X.”
