I was raised writing thank-you notes for birthday and xmas gifts. It was one of those tasks that was always completed before I went back to school from winter break. Notes were always to the same people: grandparents, aunts and uncles, family. I still write notes to these people and for those who have helped me (brought me dinner when I was sick.)
I made my kidz write notes after every gift they received. After age 18, they were adults and can make their own decisions. I explained why appreciation is important but it appears that neither will show gratitude in what has been offered to them.
Parenting is hard. We do what we can, teach the best values, and be a good role model. They make their own choices.
