The Life of a Showgirl

Leading up to the Friday, October 3 release date, I watched so many speculation videos about what the songs would be about and what the sound and vibe were going to be. There were conjectures that it would be more of a dance album since it was produced by Max Martin and Shellback. Every time that Taylor Swift would be seen in public wearing plaid, there would be some theory about what it all meant. I found an American swiftie living in AU that was knowledgeable and interesting and added her to my list of swiftie accounts. I was so excited in the pre-release and was glad that DH2 was going to be back in CA when the album dropped so I could totally devote myself to the new music experience.

The album dropped at 2pm Melbourne time so I videoed myself listening to a few seconds of each song. I have auditory processing disorder so I have a hard time understanding words as spoken and even a harder time when they are sung. Spotify didn’t have the lyrics available so I had to make do with the melodies and vibes. I did catch some of the phrases and words and was curious what the songs actually said. For the rest of the day, I played the album on repeat while I got ready for a party.

The next day was the movie “The release of a Showgirl” movie in theaters. I bought tickets for the Crown Theater 10:30am show, outfitted myself for the experience, and headed out on the tram. There weren’t as many people in the theater as I expected. The signature drink was an aperol spritz so I ordered one for the show. I was mesmerized during the whole movie. The lyric videos were just what I needed to understand the songs but saw that the were all clean lyrics. I liked this since there were many little girls in the audience plus I kinda prefer the clean lyrics which is out of character for me. When “Wood” began, I was wondering how she was going to make those lyrics clean and when they displayed on the screen, the audience openly laughed. Loved it.

It was so warm when the movie was over that I couldn’t wear my jacket and was in full glam while waiting for the tram. I didn’t make eye contact with anyone because I didn’t want to see anyone’s reaction to me. On the ride home, I decided I should go see it again and went to the Hoyts at Melbourne Central. That theater had a VIP experience that I purchased whereby they would deliver your drink/food to your seat and you could call for service from your chair. I loved the movie a second time and was flying high the rest of the day. I had the album on as a soundtrack for whatever I was doing.

On Sunday’s social media feed, there were stories that Taylor Nation was playing a game with us and we had to find orange doors in cities around the world that unlocked a video that had clues in them for more easter eggs. Many of the doors had been found and then I saw that Melbourne was one of the cities!!! Other city doors were projections at night on walls so I had to wait until it was darker. I didn’t know where to look. I hopped on Reddit to see what others were saying and the guesses were Cardigan street or Flinders Station. I kept refreshing to see updated info and learned that someone found it at Melbourne Station. I put my shoes on and ran over there, walking around outside and inside trying to find the door. The orange door was in rotation with other ads in the middle of the shops, where the giant pocket watch is. It was exciting to be an active part in this swiftie experience. It does feel like a cult but it’s a nice cult.

I’ve listened to the album at least once a day. At first I liked all the songs equally but now my top 5 are: Opalite, Fate of Ophelia, Honey, Cancelled, and Actually Romantic. They’ve been added to my favorites list. I know all the words to Opalite and the Fate of Ophelia, learned the initial dance for the Fate of Ophelia, and have watched multitudes of analyses videos. I bought opalite in Morro Bay and shared one with son’s GF so she could have some too. Opalite has taken over my favorite song from Style. Shock.

Merchandise I’ve bought: cardigan (with CD that I gave to son’s GF), signet ring, pjs and robe. Non-TLOAS merch: Reputation snake bracelet and the Eras Tour tshirt. Love them all. They give me such joy wearing any and all of them. Merry Christmas to me!
