The House Girl by Tara Conklin is my book club’s April pick. Although it wasn’t one I voted for (I wanted a sci-fi book called The Bone Season), it was an interesting read.
The story is divided between a current day lawyer who is researching info on a reparations case for descendants of American slaves, and a “House Girl” who finds solace in art and yearns for her freedom. The two stories are intertwined and neatly tie up a little too neatly in the end.
Issues of identity, freedom, family, abandonment are explored. I bet most book club members will like it.
