I saw the movie The Help in 2011 on the big screen. I enjoyed it then so when the audio-book was available in preparation for a long car drive, I decided to take the opportunity to visit with these characters again.
There are multiple stories being told in Mississippi of different classes and relationships. The grand story revolves around civil rights issues in the early 1960’s. Small stories are about friendships, family, women’s rights, child abuse, domestic violence, cancer, romance, revenge. All of the characters are well developed and relatable even when they are the antagonists.
Because I listened to the story, I had these southern accents running in my head and sometimes they came out of my mouth, much to the delight of a co-worker. The movie was good, the book was better.
