The Girl Who Fell from the Sky by Heidi W. Durrow was this month’s book club choice. A main topic centered around race, mix-ed race children, the rights and dignity of mixed-race people. Since this was also a central topic in the previous book Island beneath the Sea, I thought it an interesting coincidence.
This debut novel tells the story of Rachel, the daughter of a Danish mother and a black G.I. who becomes the sole survivor of a family tragedy.
This was a quick read and given the topic of family-cide and suicide, I’m glad it only took a few hours to read. It was sad to read how there is still so much prejudice there is against muti-racial people, how there are still so many negative words to hurl upon others.
