The Expats

The Expats by Chris Pavone is a quick and fun spy thriller from a female perspective. It reads much differently from a John le Carré novel. Besides the usual CIA titillation with secrets, international intrigue, and assassinations, the heroine dealt with marriage, kids, play dates and childcare. Ahh, something with which I can relate.

Kate wants out of the CIA so when her husband wants to move to Europe, she happily agrees. After a period of time, another expat couple arrive and wedge their way into Kate’s world, making her suspicious of them. Who are they, are they bad guys, are they investigating her or her husband? This story danced around money laundering, hacking, and shady financial dealings.

There are multiple twists and turns so much so that by the end, I was dizzy. It was a pleasant diversion.
