A mere 45 minute flight deposited us in the northern Tasmanian city of Launceston where we visited their Cataract Gorge Reserve and their Art Gallery at Royal Park to admire the art of Michael McWilliams. On the drive to Wynyard, we visited the Australian Axeman’s Hall of Fame which was a bit surreal.
Our friends have property out of Wynyard that they are working on so one day they can retire there. They visit 2x year to clear brush and prepare the area for their some-day home. We walked the property and spent a couple hours burning the brush they had cleared. It felt illegal for a California girl to purposely set a brush fire.

We traveled to their local lighthouse, Boat Harbour Beach, and got to see tulip and poppy farms.

After a lovely 2 nights, we headed south to the mining town of Queenstown. Along the way, the city of Corinna was DH2’s highlight when we walked along the river’s forest path and ferried across the river via a cabled barge.
In Queenstown, we visited Iron Blow Lookout and the Eric Thomas Galley Museum. In this museum was a display case of the Royals but all instances of Prince Andrew were taped over by dot stickers or “disowned by His Mother the Queen.” Pretty funny. We stayed in the Empire Hotel that had this amazing National Trust listed staircase made from Tasmanian Blackwood.
On our way out of town, we hiked Horsetail Falls and proceeded to meander to Hobart but got distracted by echidna along the road. We stopped at a winery to visit with a GF and then headed to the airport to conclude our fun week.
