So many sweets
As many restaurants there are in Melbourne, there is an equal number of sweet shops selling all types of sweets. Sometimes there are more sweet shops open than restaurants!
Types of sweets
- yogurt
- ice cream
- Chinese desserts
- custard tarts
- chocolate
- tea with fruit/boba
- coffee with boba
- Taiwanese desserts (yes, this is different from Chinese!)
- pastry: Greek, Lebanese, Italian, and Chinese (buns for all seasons)
- cookies, macrons
- I bet there are more but I get overwhelmed with all of the brightly colored store fronts
We returned to the Yarra Valley with our sponsoring company to do some wine tasting and chocolate indulgence. The Yarra Valley Chocolaterie and Ice Creamery was an explosion of colorful packaging and display tables. We watched the treats being made in the kitchens, see image above. The ice cream concoctions were huge and elaborate in presentation, so large that 4 people could eat the same one and still be satisfied. They had a beautiful interpretation of hot chocolate: hot milk with chocolate bits at the bottom and chocolate dusting on top, with the chocolate syrup served on the side. All tummies were stuffed on the bus ride home.
We try not to eat many treats because we eat so much actual food that we are gaining weight without eating sweets. The egg tarts shown above are the exception to that, as we only buy one to share between us. We even found a Portuguese egg tart in a food truck outside of the museum.
My Favorite
My absolute favorite dessert was from Smile Bread. I don’t know exactly what is was called or how to even describe it other than it was pudding/frosting-like filling wrapped in a cloud pastry. Light, tasty, OMG. When something is that good, I need to stay away from it so I don’t eat ALL of it! Yum!
