I have been reading the Sunday comics since I was ten years old. I had a 5th grade teacher who had us read the newspaper every day. (I didn’t realize until I was an adult that her husband was the editor of the paper.)
- I didn’t really understand Doonsbury and Watergate but I read it anyway.
- My favorite was Peanuts. I had a thing for Snoopy. I haven’t read it since Schultz died.
- I remember “Gordo” by Gus Arriola and remember that I liked when there was a relationship type of storyline. I didn’t know until I was an adult that it reinforced Mexican stereotypes and some people protested because of that.
- I read Gasoline Alley and again liked it when there was a relationship story line.
- I did not like Andy Capp because of how the characters treated each other. I read it anyway.
- I liked Family Circus. I was 10 after all.
- There was BC and Broom Hilda too.
- I didn’t see Garfield until I was 17.
I liked the comedy, the characters, the world I got to enter every day.
And Doonsbury did help me understand politics.
