Mike Judge (Beavis and Butthead, Office Space) turned his attention to the topics of start-up companies and geekdom, crossed The Social Network with The Big Bang Theory, and brought us HBO’s Silicon Valley. The main story is about a guy who has an awesome compression algorithm and begins a company with this idea.
The characters are one-note, with not much development in the season. Realistically though, software guys stay consistent in their universe. Laughable items:
- One guy talked about coding subroutines. Um, no one does that anymore, that’s BASIC and Fortran.
- The google car drives a guy into a cargo container without allowing the guy to get out, thus sending the character on a 4-day container voyage.
- Going to Arby’s on El Camino – too real
- “Jobs was a poser, he didn’t even write code.”
- Awful business names, awful logos, awful PR.
- The teen hacker who promises to fix their cloud problem in a weekend but needs his Adderall to make it happen
Wickedly funny at points, painfully accurate at others, Silicon Valley was worth a binge.
