Serengeti

July 31-August 2

On the Serengeti, we saw lion, leopard, elephant, zebra, wildebeest, Thompson gazelle, giraffe, ostrich, topi antelope, secretary bird, hippo, heartbeest antelope, cape buffalo, goshawk, warthog, banded mongoose, lion cubs, cheetah, banded mongoose, jackal, hyena, and buzzards. Our guide was skilled at his job and found all but one thing we wanted to see.

At our tent accommodations, we had to request an escort if we wanted to leave the tent when it was dusk/dark. After dinner, Maasi dancers and drummers entertained us.

In Swahili, serengeti = open plains and safari = travel so I was on an open plains travel adventure.

On our last morning, we found antelope and buffalo outside our tent on the way to breakfast. We saw the sunrise over the hippo pond.

Wild animals don’t take stage direction well. I would tell them to look up or stop but they just didn’t listen. I missed more pix than I captured.

I loved seeing wild animals in their natural habitat doing what wild animals do. Extraordinary experiences:

  1. A lion pride with 1 male, 4 females, and 11 cubs between 4-6 weeks old.
  2. A gazelle was killed by a car so we witnessed the gathering of hyenas, jackals, and buzzards. The laughing noises the hyenas made while fighting over the gazelle was surreal.
  3. Adolescent male elephants play-fighting
  4. Mating lions
