Sixteen months after Daughter started her driver training, she finally has her license. This opens up a new level of freedom for me—oh! I meant for her.
Driving home after a detour for ice cream, I said
We’ve kept you alive for this many years. Our goal is for you to stay alive. Driving is something that can interfere with that goal.”
I talked about distracted driving issues, specifically that she should leave her tablet in the backpack and not to have it in the front seat with her to tempt. Her response:
Statistically, you’re going to outlive me for the next few years. If I can get through the next 3 years, then I’ll outlive you”
Although true, there are steps that can be taken to increase those chances of making it out alive in the next 3 years. Safe driving is the most important step. There were no arguments, just a good discussion.
We talked about her actual driving test and she revealed that twice when the evaluator asked her to turn in one direction, Daughter turned in the opposite direction. This did not surprise me, since she’s never leaned left and right (Daughter protests and says, I know my watch is on my left arm.) So here is a kid who gets 800s on her advanced math SAT test, but doesn’t know right from left!
