As a child, my Aunt Alice had fruit trees: plums, apricots, peaches, nectarines. I learned what real fruit tasted like. I was surprised then when she sold the farm and we had to eat these fruits from a grocery store. They bore little resemblance to the sweet treats I was accustomed to.
I have a garden that has multitudes of strawberry plants. I love giving my boys the chore of “harvesting.” They come in with strawberries, green beans, tomatoes and zucchini. The strawberries are everyone’s favorite. They taste how a strawberry should taste. They aren’t as big or perfect as the grocery store berries, but wow, they define strawberry taste.
We also have a blueberry farm semi-nearby. Son came home from a blueberry picking extravaganza and I had to mix the blueberries with my garden strawberries over cottage cheese. The perfect summer dessert.
