In Naviance (the school software to track students), parents have to (get to?) fill out a “brag sheet,” something that could be added to college applications if it were admissible. Here are the directions:
Parent Letter Prompt: (This section is to be completed by your parent/guardian. They can either write directly in the space provided, or you can copy and paste a word document into the below text field). What would you want the admissions office to know about your child that they would not be able to learn from their transcript and the college application? Possible topics may include discussion regarding greatest strengths, most unique characteristics, significant family events, personal obstacles, etc. (We recommend a half page- one page thoughtful response).
Here was my response for Daughter:
When I would be distressed by Daughter’s childhood behavior child, sage professionals told me that she was just really bright and would grow up to be a very interesting adult. I’m happy that this was the case. Besides being smart, she had the ability at a young age to formulate an idea and bring it to fruition. Whether it was writing a “How to Solve a Rubik’s Cube” manual in elementary school or teaching herself Flash to create her own “Improbable Quiz,” she not only created projects for herself to learn new things but she actually carried them to completion. Her projects and ideas have only gotten larger and more complicated. Aside from mental abilities, she developed other fun traits. She is completely functional is the kitchen with the ability to make killer desserts. She trained and participated in triathlons, showing off hers physical feats. I was surprised when she jumped into theater and blossomed in stage light. I am proud of her participation in Boy Scouts, earning her rank of Eagle Scout. I am gratified that she is a good family member, community member and leader.
Now if she would only just apply to college!
