Only Weekend in the City

With only one month in AU, we have to cram a lot into a short period of time. Over the past 2 weeks, I’ve been exploring and checking items off my list.

New Art

I noticed immediately upon walking around the CBD that there was some new art that I needed to investigate. Federation Square was advertised as having “Kaleidosquare” art. The Fed Square letters had a make-over, depicting the Creator spirit, Bunjil – thanks to artist Robert Michael Young, Gunnai, Waradjuri, Gunditjmara and Yorta Yorta man. Cupid’s Koi Garden by ENESS – were brilliantly colored, blow up fountain fish.

The art gallery called “No Vacancy” in the QV building had this great piece called “The Gay Agenda” by Alun Rhys Jones. The painting overlooking Russell Street and the red sculpture on Swanston round out the public art for this trip.

Library!

The library is literally across the street and takes up an entire city block. I mentioned in my Difference post that people hang out on the grass day and night and I always wanted to be one of those people. One day, BF and I just sprawled on the grass and enjoyed the sunshine.

I was antsy one day so I ventured into the library to see if there were tours (10:15 Friday only) and if I could look around. I was astonished by the architecture and art, with the La Trobe Reading Room reminding me of a fantasy rendition of a library and galleries of paintings. The next day I took BF and GF to experience it first hand.

Food

My goal was to return to my favorite restaurants and try Vanilla Slice. I’d researched the best place to get it and we walked the 2km+ to the French Lettuce for Sunday breakfast. A meat pie, vanilla slice, and cappuccino were perfect fuel before we visited the Melbourne Museum.
