Cartier
The NGV’s Cartier exhibit was stunning. I was first in the door at 10am and began in the first room but I was aware that I was going to want to spend a lot of time with the tiaras and take careful pix of them so I decided to make a bee line to the tiara room while no one was there. I had the whole room to myself for 40 minutes. I initially took pix of the ones I loved but then read each description and spent even more time with the jewels. I went back to the beginning of the exhibit and proceeded like a normal person. Here were some of my favorites:
- Sketches to design including paintings of the jewelry
- Invitations targeting specific countries, inviting the elite to look at the Cartier collection. They were as beautiful as the collection was
- The focus on specific regions e.g. India, Iran, Russia, general Arabic motifs
- Cartier in the movies
- Elizabeth Taylor and Princess Grace’s Cartier jewels
- Whole section on time pieces including watches and clocks
- A video showing a panther pin from sketch to completion
By the time I got to the tiara room with everyone else, it was crowded and I’m glad I had my private time with the beauties. The music was wonderful and the whole experience made the grief bubble up so I sat in the middle and cried for a while. I’m quite good at crying in public places: museums, airplanes, parks. Still, a fabulous exhibit.
Things I did
- The thick morning fog (9:30am) offered interesting skyscapes for me to photograph
- Got memberships at the Melbourne Museum and NGV
- Joined a gym since our pool area is under renovation for several months
- Got a library card
- Visited the Linden New Art Gallery to view their Postcard Show
- Returned to the St Kilda dispensary for my THC
- Tried to get my drivers license but Vic Roads said no, I needed medical clearance due to my MG. Grrr.
- Got my hair cut, brows threaded, and had a head spa treatment
- Took a bus to Costco to get Dawn Dish Soap – very happy
- Started laser hair removal for my bikini line – I got tired of waxing
- Visited the Art Bank for Melbourne Open House
- Saw The Odyssey on the only 70mm film IMAX screen in the southern hemisphere
- Birthday at Bacash
Datelines
We only managed one dateline this month due to other weekend plans and illness. We finally did Glen Waverly and DH2 gave it a 5/10 rating. It wasn’t as bleak as Upfield but no where as nice as Belgrave. We’ve taking this line multiple times to the second to the last stop to visit a friend but we’d just never been to the end. Outside the train station, there was a small road filled with the usual restaurants and shops. We had dim sum and completed our second to the last line.
Townhall Side Quests
Heidelberg Town Hall – City of Banyule 7/7
My walking group ended in Ivanhoe and I searched “town hall near me” and I got Heidelberg! I liked this art deco vibe for the doors.
Oakleigh Town Hall – City of Monash 7/15.
This was just a building connected to library. There was something happening in the main hall, I didn’t want to interfere.
Collingwood Town Hall – City of Yarra 7/24
What a grand building this is! Not only is it a functioning town hall but it also doubles for community events. Every room inside was interesting.
Coburg City Hall – City of Merri-bek 7/29
This was the first example of a domed entry. Temple-like? I liked the memorial out front with different conflicts on each of the 4 sides. Inside was a functioning city hall with installed art.
Photography
My first U3A class for this term was at Fitzroy Gardens and we got to use lens balls for our photographic study.
Six
The musical Six had a run here a few years ago but I missed it then. When it was going to show again, I jumped at the opportunity. The show was sparkly, fun and energetic. I recommend!
