Melbourne 2026 January

The month was punctuated with physio exercises and a graduation out of the moon-boot. With a new diagnosis of osteopenia, the list of required exercises grew to include more weight bearing and balance exercises. In my walking group, I would meet them at the beginning of the walk and then if I knew their ending spot, I would go directly there and have coffee with them.

Datelines

Due to other weekend activities, we only did Williamstown. Although we’d previously been to Williamstown twice, both times it was only the beginning of a long walk. Once we ferried over and then walked to Newport and once we trained to Williamstown and then walked to Altona. This time, we went for a proper dateline to open the year. It was a warm and lovely day where I did my first physio grass-walking exercise. We ate a lunch, walked to the end of the pier, and bopped into the tourist center. I sneaked in a town hall side quest.

Townhall Side Quests

Williamstown – City of Hobsons Bay 1/2 – We wandered through a super cute area of town while walking to the town hall. The building itself was ok. Upon entering, we were informed that there was an event occurring and that we wouldn’t be allowed to enter. When I asked what could I take a pic of, they did allow me into the meeting room foyer so I got my 2nd pic.

St. Kilda Town Hall – City of Port Phillip – 1/8 – very nice facade, no front entrance. Went to the side door and it opened to a more modern building with signs that said no photography. The outside was covered in pigeons and had a statue with a title something like “statue for a public building”

Brunswick Town Hall – City of Merri-bek – 1/12 – It was SO closed and wouldn’t open from the holidays until 1/19. I bopped next door to the library to ask about it.

North Melbourne Town Hall (formerly Hotham Town Hall) – City of Melbourne – 1/23 – There was a lonely receptionist at the desk who was very helpful. He said that the building was now just a community building and he took me upstairs when the bell was ringing and showed me the staff eating area on a cute rooftop area.

South Melbourne Town Hall (formerly Emerald Hill Town Hall) – City of Port Phillip – 1/28 – it’s all boarded up for 2 years of renovations. I wanted to see it because it was filming location for the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries.

I finished the Miss Fisher Murder Mysteries series and had to see the Wardlow House for myself.

Photography

My U3A photo group met for one last session. We went to many graffiti laneways that I had never seen before!

The DIVA exhibit was amazing!

Our Ohio friends passed their citizenship exams last July and were sworn in as citizens on Australia Day. I liked hearing the different values that Australia embraces. We celebrated with lunch and then wandered to the AO Hilltop for some AO vibes.

Bridgerton Masquerade Parlour

As part of the new season of Bridgerton promotion, Netflix had a Masquerade Parlour pop-up event. Since it was a first-come, first serve event, I was in line 40 minutes early behind an actual reviewer who was interviewed by Netflix! Some women were dressed up but most were not. When you entered, there was a sitting area where the costumed workers gave an orientation of the stations to rotate through and then we proceeded to see what our jewelry tones should be (silver or gold), we could touch up our makeup, try on gloves, find a good hair decoration, try on jewelry, and get a mask recommendation from a gentleman who looked like Lumiere. Upstairs, you had your pic taken and they used AI on me!
