Jet lag killed me the first few days back from California. Yes, I do want to go to sleep at 7pm thank you very much. This month as jammed packed with activities and adventures.
I’ve had FOMO for the Firelight Festival for years. I’d see social media videos and want to go. We went with another couple. It was very cold and crowded but the fire sculptures, food trucks, performers, and inflatable sculptures were absolutely worth it. Every 15 minutes or so, flame throwers would shoot off into the sky around us. Exciting!
After only five days, DH2 flew off to Greece for a week, leaving me to my own devices. I took 2 busses to the Heide Museum and learned about its history and collections. The sculpture garden was fun and I enjoyed reading about the polycule commune that started it all.
I finally checked out the largest shopping mall in the southern hemisphere. Chadstone shopping center was indeed large. All 3 major food stores, Target AND Kmart, plus a slew of high end stores.
I slid into Costco with an American friend, and even got dates, figs, blueberries, and nuts. It was nice to be in a familiar setting. The food court was inside the store, I guess because of weather? Don’t know but everything about this was chaotic.
I’d always been curious about the NGV Friday Night series so I took myself on a date. The line was so long but I was impressed by how many people were dressed up; men were in suits and women were in heels! I had a salad and a glass of sparkling wine before I moved into the Impressionist Exhibition. The rooms were styled for the era, down to light fixtures and sconces. It was a lush experience.
A Taylor Swift silent disco?! Yes please, sign me up! Sixty people showed, half of which were female under the age of 20. We all received headphones that channeled the magical music to us along with the DJ instructing us to do certain things. We danced around the atrium, through Fed Square, entertained diners in the nearby restaurants, and wandered to Southbank where we ended on the Evan Walker Bridge. SO much fun!
Another item I got to check off my FOMO list was the Lightscape at the botanic garden. The lights and music were fun and made me very happy. The mulled cider was pretty tasty too.
I often wondered what was at the end of every train line so a new weekend activity for us is to pick a train line, ride it to the end, then have a date. Our first outing was the Sandringham line. The weather was so cold and windy, it was almost painful. We walked the beach to Hampton and rolled up on a butcher shop barbecuing snags on its sidewalk. Yum. I loved this. Our second outing was taking the Cranbourne line which was not so exciting. The kebab place was closed and we didn’t want to go to Maccas (aka McDonalds) so we went to a pokies place for lunch. I don’t think we need to repeat that location.
My U3A classes started so along with my existing walking, wine, and photography groups, I signed up for classes covering Egyptology and The 60’s. I also attended a lecture covering the Impressionist exhibit at the NGV.
Melbourne Open House is a yearly event where buildings, businesses, and houses are open for tours. I was late to the party so when I tried to sign up for stuff, tours were booked out. We slid into the Pride Victoria Center tour and saw the beautiful architecture that was completed in 2021. We wandered into the ANZ Gothic Bank Museum and got a taste of that building and history.
A pair of pjs that my mom had given me finally deteriorated after 20 years. I didn’t want to throw them away so I repurposed them into a nail tool caddy. I’m so glad to do this.
I spent a week taking videos of myself for my birthday video. It was fun to plan, film, and edit. Another year around the sun!
