Melbourne 2024 November

Although we had hopes for democracy, after waking up on Wednesday after the election, we were glad that we would soon escape to Australia. Four days after the election we stepped aboard our United flight and swore allegiance to being news-free.

I posted on Threads

I landed in Australia this morning, took a deep breath, and said “smells like bodily autonomy.”

and was immediately dragged through troll-land. Wow. I’ve never been trolled so hard. Such hate was amazing. Hate from Americans for leaving, hate from Australians for arriving, hate for wanting bodily autonomy. Truly passionate reactions.

New things

  • Going on my first walk, I found the Federation bells which I thought were really cool
  • Had an oak apple drink, learned about oak apples, an had a Hopper (an Indian pancake thing)
  • My THC clinic closed so I had to find a new one with a new dispensary
  • Ate a Vegemite croissant from Lune and almost had a seagull take it directly from my hand while sitting in Fed Square
  • Met with 5 other retired women from the Cool Retired Women Facebook group

Apartments

To rent an apartment, you have to view it first via an agent. Agents post when they are going to have a showing but 50% of the time, they didn’t show up so we would walk 20 minutes to get to the show time and the agent wouldn’t arrive. Not a good business model.

We viewed a dozen apartments and fell in love with one in the QV building. We offered more than the asking price so we could jump the queue and it paid off. Since our airbnb was 2 blocks from the apartment, moving was easy-ish.

Then we got to fill up a new apartment with linens, pillows, cutlery, place settings, etc. We purchased 80% from Big W in our basement which made transporting our purchases to the apartment really easy. Then came the fun part about utilities, TV, and internet.

We had already been in the apartment for 4 days and Internet guy was supposed to show up on Thursday (Thanksgiving in the US) between 8-12. When he didn’t show up (why was I not surprised) and I called, they wouldn’t talk to me because my name wasn’t on the account. Grrr. A text came through and said they’d be by Friday 1-5. The guy showed up at 4:50, plugged something in and, said it would work with the password, and left without telling me I had to configure the modem. Because I didn’t know that, I plugged in the password and got the message that I was connected but there was no internet. Grrr. I spent 2 hours at the library on Saturday morning in a text chat with the internet provider and finally they educated me that I needed to configure the router. I needed food and coffee to tackle that task. After another hour, with much anxiety and anger, the fucking internet connected. I had to take a long walk in the rain to cleanse my soul from modem hell.

I closed out November with mixed feelings about leaving my country in a bad state and trying not to miss the old democracy and wanting to embrace my time in Australia with little guilt for wanting to be sane.
