Kon-Tiki

The Kon-tiki story has had many iterations. The first instance is the actual journey:

Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl crossed the Pacific Ocean in a balsawood raft in 1947, together with five men, to prove that South Americans back in pre-Columbian times could have crossed the ocean and settled on Polynesian islands.

Then the documentary of the event won the Academy Award in 1951, and Heyerdah wrote a book about the expedition that was translated into 70 languages and sold more than 50 millions copies around the world.

In 2012, the Hollywood version of the story was released complete with relationship back-story and added conflict for increased drama.

After watching the 2012 movie, the story itself was intriguing. I found the original documentary which was twice as good.
