Eight years of vomiting blood, misdiagnoses of Sarcoidosis and Lupus. And it all comes down to this. I liked House, M.D. for the mystery, for the brilliance of the character, for the witty banter.
Gregory House is a tortured soul, a bully with flexible ethics. So why did I like him so much and make House appointment TV? House meets my criteria of brilliant, attractive and emotionally troubled. He’s a bad boy that is fun to watch and play with. I probably wouldn’t like him in real life but he is fun in TV land.
I liked the relationships that the other characters had with each other and with House. They all brought something to the table, all flawed in some way.
I asked my friend and colleague, whom I spent much time discussing House, why she liked House:
I love House for his complex personality. When he drove through Cuddy’s home I vowed never to watch again, but after a week could not wait for it to start up again. There are always unexpected twists and turns to his feelings and actions, so I like being surprised, and most of the twists feel totally plausible within the context of who he is. And I love the relationships between the team, especially when House tries to manipulate those relationships. But for sure, my favorite moments in the show have been the priceless interactions between House and Wilson, some funny, some clever, some thoughtful, and some bittersweet. Those scenes get to the core of such important elements of life and friendship; love, compassion, loyalty, trust, betrayal, honesty and humor. As we come to the close of the show, I am considering starting back at season one, episode one…”
The first episode was named “Everybody Lies” and the last episode was named “Everybody Dies.” Such House-isms. I will miss my weekly appointment with Dr. House.
