Home Away From Home

Seven months I was away from Melbourne, but when we ubered into the city, I felt like I was coming to my home away from home. Eagerly I watched for the skyline, feeling alert and excited for each familiar landmark.

Returning to the QV building had a special thrill with of every corner, step, and sight. We’re 16 floors lower so we can’t see over the other buildings but we have a corner unit with windows looking in 3 directions. After we took our mandatory Covid test, we were ready to get our favorite sushi and go grocery shopping at Woolies. The first walk through the city was exhilarating. There were more people on the streets than last year and as we walked and we noted the businesses that didn’t survive the 5 month lock down.

I started a list of all the things I wanted to do this month. A month seems really short in comparison to the 5 months we spent in 2021. I want to cram as much in as possible.

I went for long city walks, visiting my favorite streets and spots. The National Gallery of Victoria didn’t have a cool new exhibition like last year’s Triennial.

We got to celebrate Australia Day, or Invasion Day to be accurate. It’s the equivalent of the US Independence Day. We went to Flagstaff Park, 1.1km from our apartment, for a picnic with a work friend. She had a rambunctious puppy who demanded attention while we enjoyed the local band and caught up. A summer thunder storm ended our visit.

I got my hair cut at Spada, my first cut since my cut there last June. I walked the 5.5km and even had time to visit Prahan Market, something I’d wanted to do. Check box ticked.

I’m loving the warm summer air.
