We got a worm compost bin over 10 years ago but failed at making it work. Yes, it takes work. We have been mostly successful composting our fruit and veggie scraps for almost 5 years now. Being vegan for 5 years and vegetarian for the past 1+ year, we generate a lot of raw material for the worm bin. Our CSA share by itself contributes to the large quantities of daily offerings. We get so many greens that I compost the beet and turnip tops that could be sauteed or added to a soup. The veins of kale, chard, and collards all get composted.
When Daughter mows the patch of grass in our front yard, she adds the clippings to the compost. When I find worms while weeding, I transplant them to the worm bin so they can begin their real job. I should add shredded newspaper as I’ve been advised but I forget.
It was time to plant my berry garden and I was so happy to use my nutrient rich compost. I liked how my composted food was going to be food for my new berry garden. I’m looking forward to my blueberries, blackberries, raspberries, and boysenberries.
