Emma is my 5th of 6 Austen novels. I will take a break after this before I wrap up my reading goal for the year.
I wish I had read this in order of Austen writing them. Emma was written between Mansfield Park and Persuasion. I think I would have enjoyed Persuasion better if I had read Emma in between. Emma is lighter – more of a comedy of errors than the other books. It would have been a welcome break between two solemn books.
Emma, the character, is one of those females who was born into the right family so she did not have to figure out how to marry to position herself better in life. Because she didn’t have to expend energy on that issue, she could meddle in other people’s lives. It is in the meddling and resolution of the confusion that makes this story tolerable.
