As a honeymoon gift, we flew the kids to Melbourne for a week during their spring break. I know they weren’t terribly excited about coming but DIL said “when else are we going to get a free trip to Australia?”
I knew they weren’t up for the rigorous physical endurance I demanded from my son so I had to modify my expectations of what I could share with them. They were often tired and napped through the day. Since they’re foodies, we focused on culinary experiences.
Sunday, I showed them the QV building, the library, and Central Station. We had Breadtop for lunch and Sichuan food for dinner.
On Monday we had Lune for breakfast before we headed to St. Kilda pier and a walk past Luna Park where we had lunch at Abby Road. We ate basement sushi for dinner.

On Tuesday, we went to the Kusama exhibit, at lunch at Big Esso (daughter really liked the indigenous food), had oysters at the Pearl Diver, and finished the day with Filipino ice cream at Kariton.
On Wednesday, we went to Raya for breakfast to eat a weird butter toast. This was the big day for the French Island and Phillip Island tour! We probably saw 30 koala and enjoyed a lunch on French Island and then saw wallaby and the penguin parade on Phillip Island. I upgraded to the VIP penguin experience to ensure we’d see penguins. It was SO worth it!

On Thursday, we had HSP before we did the river cruise. That evening we ate Haufbrauhaus. Yum, just roll me home!
On Friday, we trammed to Bread Club for breakfast and spent a leisurely morning at Victoria Market. They wanted to try a durian, so that’s what they got! No one liked it – plus it was so expensive! Not going to do that again. For dinner, we went to Byblos for insanely good middle eastern food and walked the south wharf. They went to a Muslim night market and navigated the trams on their own.

They weren’t interested in gardens or parliament so we went to the aquarium where I got to see a grown-up Pesto the Penguin! We had Master Lanzhao Noodles (insanely good beef soup) and they went to Kew for a special sushi dinner.

On Sunday after we bundled them into an Uber bound for the airport, DH2 and I went to Industry Beans for coffee, to Irish Times for lunch, and to a company pizza party at friends’ home. What a week! I hadn’t spent this much time with daughter in a decade. I’m glad to share what our life is like here.
