Cosmos Reboot

cosmosI was curious to see how Carl Sagan’s Cosmos: A Personal Journey would be interpreted and updated in Neil deGrasse Tyson’s Cosmos: A Spacetime Odyssey. Here are some brief musings:

  • This program is on Fox network so it has a wider distribution than the original program which was a SoCal PBS offering.
  • Since it’s on Fox, the home of ultraconservative programming, I think some of the concepts and verbiage were toned down so as not to incite the right-wing sponsors. This is disturbing since it’s supposed to be about SCIENCE, I thought.
  • At first I thought the extended animation of events was a bit cheesy, but over the weeks, I’m less judgmental of it
  • I wonder how they decided what to included in the series. Some bits seem a bit esoteric or not all that important in the big picture of science.
  • deGrasse Tyson must have spent most of his time in front of a green screen.
  • The special effects are very good.

deGrasse Tyson has a rock-star persona amongst female geeks so there are plenty of cheesecake shot for females to swoon by. His voice, so soothing, can lull you to sleep.

Cosmos is produced by money made by raunchy Family Guy and Ted money. Seth MacFarlane said “I’m at a point in my career where I have some disposable income and I’d like to spend it on something worthwhile.” I’m glad that money went to this good cause.
