88. Natural Wonders of the World: Choose one of the natural wonders of the world. Write about it.
In 1991, I had the amazing experience of diving along the barrier reef. Traveling with a BF through AU for 2 months, we took the opportunity to schedule some diving. Out of Cairns, we joined a 5-day live-aboard catamaran trip and out of Townsend, we joined a 3-day trip to dive on the SS Yongala shipwreck. Scheduled dives included dawn, late morning, late afternoon, and after dinner so to get my money’s worth, I tried to dive at every time slot.
Diving on the reef, I was surprised by a couple of things. The water was colder than what I had been used to in the Marianas Islands, Bali, or Palau so I had to wear a shortie wet suit. The colors and variety of fish and coral weren’t as diverse as those areas either. I was spoiled by my previous dive locations but I was happy to say that I did dive on the reef while it was still a living organism.
I have stories about swimming with a whale and another about getting swept away by the current during a night dive, but they can wait for another day.
