39. Coffee & Tea: Surely you drink one or the other or know someone who does- write about it!
My mom drank coffee daily with gusto. She percolated it on the stove so periodically the coffee would boil over and make an enormous mess on the stove and floor. I tasted her coffee as a kid and thought it vile.
As a hostess at Coco’s, coffee was served a main course. I found if I poured enough milk and sugar into the coffee, I could drink it but then I was jittery and a little crazy. I didn’t drink coffee often because I didn’t like the crazy but occasionally wanted the altered state. Even through college and grad school, I rarely drank coffee, I was more of a tea girl.
My first live-in BF bought a coffee maker and we made a pot once on the weekend. It was a nice ritual and fun to do together.
Then I got married and coffee became a daily thing. I now blame DH1 for my coffee addiction. We made a pot a day and although I still had the jitters and caffeine anxiety, I finally could figure out the sweet spot of drinking coffee but not have it affect my sleep. I found that as long as I didn’t have coffee after 10am, I was ok. This settled as a cup at breakfast and at my 10am snack.
I was so addicted that I was irritable if I didn’t have it every morning. Sometimes this was challenging while traveling in third-world countries.
After a surgery in 2021, my caffeine needs were reduced. I don’t need a second cup and I can in fact go without if I’m traveling.
Living in Melbourne, the coffee excellence propels me to find the best coffee on a daily basis. I wanted to compare cafes so in 2021, I only ordered flat white for each place. In AU summer 2022, I ordered cappuccinos and in in AU winter, I ordered lattes. I have a sense of what I like and what I can get the best of at each coffee location.
Did I mention boba coffee?
