38. Fire-starters: Write about building a fire.
All of my memories about fire building centers around scouting, first as a girl scout myself and then as a boy scout leader as an adult. I don’t remember details around making fires as a girl scout but I do remember what the badge looked like and that it wasn’t a highlight of my scouting career.
Fast forward 30+ years and I was a cub scout leader responsible for teaching Son’s den the steps of starting a fire. Be prepared. This was a survival skill that the boys had to know, practice, and be successful with. I think I had to practice a few times before the den meeting plus I had to inform the parents what we would be doing. All boys did pass the requirements but it touch and go for some of the boys. I don’t think I’m proficient at starting a fire, but I know the theory of it!
