34. Sounds: Sit outside for about an hour. Write down the sounds you hear.
Currently living in Melbourne’s CDB (Central Business District), the outdoor sounds are 98% city noises. When I open the sliding glass door out onto my seventh-floor balcony, I hear cars, sirens, occasional honking, cross walk chirps, tram chimes, and vocal murmurs. It has been raining (in middle of summer!) on and off and when it rains, the noise can be surprising and deafening.
Located 60 steps away from Chinatown, the Lunar New Year celebration brought periodic firecrackers at all times of day and night along with street music and parades. Although the fireworks were jolting, they were quite exciting.
Sitting here, I can now hear a distant airplane. These sounds are much different than when I’m in a local garden or out of the city.
