I don’t remember what day it was that my life changed but it was in June this year [update: it was May 29.] A GF had become a Swiftie over the pandemic and would often talk about the music, TS herself, and a podcast she listened to about TS music. She got tickets to the Eras tour and asked if I wanted to go with her.
I asked, “Don’t you want to go with one of your Swiftie friends?”
She replied, “You know how to dress up for the occasion and know how to party.”
OMG I felt so seen!
I decided I needed to prepare myself for the concert since I was way behind the ball on knowing TS music. I decided to listen the “Holy Swift” podcast to begin the journey. This podcast picks one song an episode and discusses it at length. After listening to the podcast, I would see if there was an accompanying video to watch that. Then TikTok started serving me TS content which I couldn’t get enough of.
Because I was traveling just before the concert, I had to select an outfit which is half the fun of anything in life. I googled “what to wear to the Eras concert” at least once a day for a week. I looked through my existing closest but even with a red sequin dress and other sparkly options, I didn’t like anything. Then I shopped at local stores but again couldn’t find the right thing. I found what I needed at Target: a lavender sequin shift and cowboy boots. I also bought lavender nail polish and the PAT McGRATH LABS LiquiLUST™: Legendary Wear Matte Lipstick to round out the look. I used a lavender hair tint for concert day and make sure I had sparkle highlighted make up.
By the time the concert happened, I was a Swiftie. I did manage to memorize the bridge of “Cruel Summer” and the concert chants so was as ready as I could be for the final night of her US tour.
I think back to a year ago when I wasn’t a Swiftie and see how gray my life was in comparison to the shiny life I’m living now. I like having so many melodies and lyrics in my head at all times because it keeps out all negative self talk. I like being a part of a parasocial community where people gather around one thing and can elicit such creativity and passion. I know it’s a cult but I’m ok with that.
