310. Movie Conversation: Use a memorable conversation from a favorite movie to inspire your writing.
At a party almost 20 years ago, in whatever conversation I was discussing things, I asked a question along the lines of “wouldn’t it be nice if there was an answer to the meaning of life” and someone answered “42.” I was 42 at the time so I agreed but I had not yet read Douglas Adams’ “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy,” so I did not know that this answer was quoting from the book. It was several years until I read the book with the kids and discovered this connection. Forty-two is the ASCII code for the symbol * also known as the asterisk. This symbol is often thought to translate to anything or everything. In this instance, 42 = everything, the meaning of life.
