284. Making a Choice: Write about a time when you had to make a difficult choice.
Once upon a time, I was a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist. This destination had been a long, difficult, and expensive process so the thought of walking away from this profession was fraught with anxiety. After my second kid was born, DH suggested that I find a new profession. He’d always been concerned about malpractice and that he’d lose wealth because of a mistake I had made. The internet was just becoming a “thing” so I entertained the idea of creating websites. UCSB had a robust extension program so I looked at the Web Master certification. This meant abandoning my 4 year undergrad degree, my 2 year masters degree, the 3,000 hours of supervised professional experience, the year of studying for the written exam, the year of preparing for the oral exam, and the years already working in the field. I was tired of conflict and exhausted from two kids. I had to hire a sitter to watch the kids on weekends and in the evenings to take the classes and ended up getting a certification in graphic design as well but it was worth it. I always thought I’d return to being a therapist or somehow using my license in some capacity but I never did. I made the right choice.
