In the November 2022 Vanity Fair magazine, an article that caught my eye was “The Aftermath” about what Afghanistan is like a year after the Taliban regained power and began erasing women from public life. I’m enraged over the Taliban’s banning of education for girls after 6th grade, the mandate for women to be covered completely except for their eyes, restricting employment, and forbidding women to leave the house without a male escort. Advertising images of women have been defaced with blotted out faces. If a woman’s husband and sons have died, she is not allowed to work to support her or her family. Food insecurity disproportionately affects women. I am appalled that this is allowed in the world and that a “religion” is the impetus for such acts.
