185. Applause: Write about giving someone a standing ovation.
Is it me or have ovations become the norm rather than the exception? When I was younger, ovations were rare, reserved for sublime works of art. I would go to LA Philharmonic symphonies conducted by Michael Tilson Thomas which were beautiful performances and there would be no ovation. Then as the kids went through school, I observed more and more ovations for school performances which seemed to spill into paid public performances. At concerts, everyone stands anyway so how can you tell if it’s an ovation or not? Perhaps it’s not a sign of enthusiastic appreciation but now the norm for general applause.
