11. Dragon: Envision a dragon. Do you battle him? Or is the dragon friendly?
I can’t remember the first dragon in stories or film; I wonder when and where it was. I do remember that the only time I wanted to write a story, the only plot I could envision was a dragon guarding a princess with a knight who had to save her. Patriarchy and fairy tale much? Alas, when I began writing my fiction, I found I had no words. This was the universe telling me that I was not going to be a writer. I remember being confused and disappointed because I thought of myself as someone who could excel at what I wanted to do.
The first dragon I remember is Smaug from “Lord of the Rings.” I do see dragons as hording creatures who are ruthless. I like Toothless from “How to Train Your Dragon” since he is friendly, helpful, and a good dragon in a dog-like way. The most recent dragon exposure is from “Game of Thrones” which elicits complicated feelings of family and fighting.
I doubt I’ll ever write the fairy tales but hasn’t someone already written that story?
