Canberra and Sydney

I completed my AU state/territory bingo card by finally visiting Canberra. The Canberra Deep Space Communication Complex was a bit of a pilgrimage for DH2. We watched the largest disk re-orient itself and enjoyed playing the immensity of the dishes.

Since I’m reading “Australian Politics for Dummies,” I was happy to visit Parliament to see the building and a restored version of the Magna Carta.

On the drive from Canberra to Sydney, we stayed at an airbnb called L’air du wombat and visited the Big Merino, a 15.2 meter tall concrete statue of a merino ram.

We stayed in the Sydney suburb called Ultimo, in a pub hotel. It rained everyday but we still enjoyed our time. We walked through Darling Harbor to the botanic garden before we went to the Westfield Tower. After a few minutes outside the top of the tower, the guide got a call that a lightening storm was on its way in so we had to cut our adventure short.

I did tour the Opera House in 1991 and it was different from the 2025 tour. The inside architecture was stunning. We got to watch a ballet rehearsal which felt like we were watching a movie. The decor in one side of the Opera House is red and the other is purple so we matched perfectly.

We wandered the Art Gallery of New South Wales and had dinner back at the Opera House.

We spent a night in Coogee before we rode the southern coast back to Melbourne. We had perfect weather for this leg of the journey. Our last side quest was a ferry to Raymond Island where we saw a couple dozen koala! Great trip. I liked the elevation change and stairs in Sydney.
