Based on the Young Adult novel by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl, Beautiful Creatures is a supernatural love story much in the vein of Twilight but with witches rather than vampires. Set in the deep south, where civil war re-enactments are the highlight of life, the soon to be witch Lena moves to town and mortal Ethan falls in love with her.
There are curses, charms and dreams that move the story along with it culminating on Lena’s 16th birthday where she discovers if she will be a “good witch or a bad witch” (my description taken from the Oz story).
The movie has two British actors speaking in southern drawls. Jeremy Irons and Emma Thompson are the acting standouts in the cast. Thompson played her campy, sexy role with grand deliciousness. I loved seeing Professor Trelawney from Harry Potter with civil war décolletage being very evil.
This was Son’s choice of movie for the evening. Fluffy and entertaining.
