Leading up to my streak of bad luck, I had a week of doctors appointments, a colonoscopy, and a printer that needed a weird part. I figured that the yucky stuff was over and I could start on my to-do list.
Car – Monday
After purchasing bar shampoo and conditioner at Ulta, my car started but would not move forward or backward. I tried everything and when I tried to turn it off, the car kept running. Crap, I can’t even turn it off? I had an un-cancellable appointment in an hour and wouldn’t have time to call AAA, wait for a tow truck, go to the dealer, and then get to my appointment on time, so I had the real decision of whether to leave the car running while I abandoned it. I tried to lock it with my hand as I usually did but it wouldn’t lock. I figured if someone could get it to move forward or backward, they could steal my car and I would give them my blessing. When I used the physical key to lock the door, the engine turned off. Whew! I took an uber to the appointment but afterwards, my phone was dead. I walked out to State Street, took a bus to the nearest drop to the house, and walked the 1.5 miles home in flip-flops.
Garage door – Tuesday
I rented a car so my neighbor drove me to the rental agency. I drove home and parked in the garage while I had a zoom training but when I went to drive again, the garage wouldn’t open. I had to then find a repair company that could come out that day. After a few hours, they arrived, opened the door so I could at least release the car from its entrapment. The repair guy said he’d come out the next day with a new motor. Sigh
Internet – Wednesday
The internet goes out in the middle of the night so in the morning I do all the troubleshooting that Cox says to do. The final decision was that Cox had to come out to fix it. Sigh. Since I had no internet, it seemed like a good day to deal with my car. AAA came, we took it to the dealer, and left it there. They said it would be several days. Good thing I had rented a car.
Bank eats my checks – Friday
As I deposited my checks, the ATM began to act sketchy and sure enough ate my checks without giving me a receipt or even acknowledging that I was there. At least I got my card back. I first had to call in the broken ATM. Then I sat in the lobby of the bank and called in the claim on my checks for the next hour. Last year a different branch ATM ate my checks. I will never deposit checks again.
Respite
We had a lovely weekend in Morro Bay with son, his GF, and her parents. I needed some fun.
Financial stress
Week 3 was about things breaking or going wrong financially e.g. I got a bill that said it was overdue if I didn’t pay it yesterday. Except I had never seen the other notices. All of these financial setbacks were at least under $1K as opposed to the previous week’s issues. The beginning of week 4 seemed ok, I was seeing people, going places, and getting things done.
Fracture toe
A rootball is the mass of soil, roots, and growing medium that surrounds the base of a plant, especially trees and shrubs, when it’s dug up
For a couple of weeks on my morning walk, I’d seen a rootball on the side of the road, not quite out of the way. On a Friday morning, I decided I’d kick it off the route. I’ve been a gardener much of my life and my experience with rootballs is that they were lightweight but when I kicked it, I found it quite solid. Pain reverberated through my body and I walked up the driveway. After I’d iced it for 30 minutes, I had to get up and thought I’d just walk on my heel. Hard no, the pain was excruciating. Hmmm, maybe this is more than a stubbed toe. DH2 was out of town, GF was on vacation, and son was working. I didn’t have the patience to figure anything out so my plan was to duct tape the ice pack to my foot and drive myself to Urgent Care. This was extremely painful and difficult since I could put no weight on my foot. I found 2 canes to help. At Urgent Care, once I got 2 steps out of the car, security came over with a wheelchair and saved me. The big toe was thoroughly fractured. They gave me a moon-boot and sent me home.

I ran out of resilience and emotionally couldn’t bounce back from this. Resilience helped me deal with the preceding bad luck but there was nothing left to help me cope with this physical set back. And then I got a cold with a cough. Great. I was so done.
In bed for 2 weeks doing RICE. Sleeping with the boot.
Bad luck? Karma? If it’s karma, what did I do?
