We visited Poker Flats Research Range which is part of the geophysical institute (university of Alaska, Fairbanks). Here, they set off rockets for weather and atmospheric research. Our lecturer, Don Hampton, an optics guy, was very thorough in his description of their research function. He had a 1950s version and a current day version of an all-sky camera. He showed us a video of the aurora we saw on Saturday night.
At the Fairbanks Curling Club, we learned all about the sport of curling. The town of Fairbanks was established in 1901 and the Curling Club followed in 1903, the sport being played on the river with real brooms (the broom have been replaced by mop looking things.) We all wanted to play but it was league night at the club. It was multi-generational event with the bar being a featured benefit.
No aurora again tonight.
