We went to the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska, Fairbanks where Dr. Hui Zhang lectured on the aurora borealis. She presented what the aurora is, how it is formed, its cycle and how it affects us. We then had a presentation by the librarian from same institute.
In the afternoon, we went to the visitors center and out to a dog musher kennel. The dogs were high energy critters who were born to run. Dogs are not spayed/neutered for a variety of reasons but the musher noted that if a bitch came into heat during a race, initially the musher would put her up front for the boy dogs to chase. At some point though, she turns around and says “hey boys” and that is when the bitch is put at the back of the pack.
We went to the ice festival where we viewed various sculptures. Some of the carvings were made into a cup like chair where you sit in it and someone spins you around like you were in a Disney tea cup.
Fairbanks astrological unit was on hand during the aurora viewing. We got to view the rings/stripes on Jupiter. Sadly, we saw no aurora.
