Alaska – Day 2

Parka is the name for squirrel. Squirrels were used to make coats, hence parka.

Icebergs are black in the spring because they soak up the mud they sit in. One hazardous sport is fishing on certain shores where mud is abundant. It is not uncommon for people fishing to get caught in the mud without the possibility of being extracted before the tide rises, resulting in death.

Highway workers shoot a small cannon ball into an avalanche field to trigger an avalanche along the highway when no cars are on the road. After the avalanche covers the road, snow plows clean up the road thus preventing an avalanche occurring on top of moving vehicles.

We went to Seward on Resurrection Bay to visit the Alaska SeaLife Center to see sea birds and animals. I first became aware of this center from the book Moby Duck. We then went to the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center where we got to see native mammals up close and personal.

A baby seal goes into a bar and the bartender asks what he wants to drink. He says anything except a Canadian club on the rocks.
