Adelaide + Fringe Festival

Road Trip!

One year we took a train, one year we flew, and in 2025 we drove to Adelaide. The goal for this trip was the Fringe Festival so DH2 arranged three talks at the various universities there. We drove the “middle route” on the way there which took us through Kingston where we played with Larry the Lobster. I had deja vu when spying the giant crustacean and realized I first met him in 1991 when I toured AU with a BF.

Chihuly in the Botanic Gardens

While DH2 was smoozing with his fellow academics, I wandered my favorite place in Adelaide and was delighted that there was a Chihuly exhibit.

Fringe

I saw my first brush tail possum in the park at the Festival! What a cutie pie.

Our hotel was on Rundle Mall so walking to the festival was a short walk. We saw magicians, comedians, burlesque, tequila/comedy, and song/dance routines. We walked out on a Star Trek improv performance.

The favorite and most Fringe of them all was “Chicken” where a human was dressed as an Irish chicken who became a ketamine-addicted Hollywood actor, all performed in a small yurt. The Chicken would periodically flap their wings and stare deeply into the audience’s eyes. This was the favorite for the visit – it was so random and bizarre.

I enjoyed the food, the entertainment, and the whole experience.

On the drive back, we took the northern route, seeing the Murray River and staying in the Sea Lake hotel/pub city co-op. We went to the lake for a sunrise view and listened to Malcolm Gladwell as we drove back to Melbourne.
