Dear Mom,

Got the pix you sent of the 50’s party. It looked fun. The picture of everyone from Montgomery Street was neat to see. Very familiar.

If you send any package – write Airmail on it. If it goes by boat, it could take up to 2 months for me to get it. I still haven’t gotten any of my mail from Diane. I’m scared about my bills. Can’t do anything about them though until I get them so I can’t really worry about them either.

Got 8 new clubmates, so I finally got a roommate. Oh well. She’s young but nice, she was in a sorority (most of us are ex-greek) from Chico. At least she’s brunette – not too many of us around here clubmate-wise who aren’t Asian.

Since S**** bailed on me, I’m seeing a clubmate here. He’s 31 from Oakland (white) and was the city supervisor for recreation before he came out here. See, other people bailed from their careers besides me. He’s more my type than Steve was.

Yesterday was the first day off where I didn’t have to dive for my certification. A bunch of us went to a small slang off the coast of Saipan called Managaha. It’s only ¼ mile around the island. We took a ferry over and snorkeled all day. There was a school of neon fish: they were brilliant purple, incredibly blue, and bright green depending on the light. Gorgeous. The ocean colors that day were stunning as well – blue and green as never seen in California. I took a roll of film but have no clue how long it’ll take before I get them back.

There’s a place we dive that’s a grotto. We walk down 106 steps with our dive gear on to even get to it. Once in the grotto, there are 3 passageways to the open ocean. There’s a resident  baby shark there “Otto” and lots of schools of fish swimming in tight formation. We take stale bread down and feed the fish. It’s exciting to be in the middle of a swarm of feeding fish…just so long as they’re not feeding on me! I’ve not been down 90 feet. What an accomplishment.

There aren’t any wild animals on the island. There are boonie dogs though that are pretty annoying. (Boonie dogs are stray dogs that stand out in the boonies…there are boonie kids too.) I haven’t been to the place on the postcard I sent you. I went to eat off-property for the first time at an Indian restaurant. Not too many restaurants here in the first place. Not too much of anything on the island! 80% unemployment rate. I’m still loving it to death! Keep writing!  Heart.
