I read my 2012 wrap-up and the one sentence that stands out is
I can start 2013 with the hope of a triathlon in August.”
So sad the year progressed the way it did.
General notes: Because I document my books and walking on-line, Goodreads and Map My Walk so generously offered me a cumulative score on what I did in 2013. If I counted calories somewhere, I’m sure I would get something that said: you’ve consumed 1 million calories in 2013, congratulations! Don’t think I’ll be doing that.
Books
Looking back: I read 47 books in 2013, only 6 of them were non-fiction. I guess I needed to do some escaping. I enjoyed seeing some authors read their own work and take questions from an audience.
Looking forward: If I’m not walking everyday, I probably won’t be consuming as many books. My goal is to read all Jane Austin novels this year. I’ve never read any and she seems to be quite popular so I might as well see what it’s all about.
Comics
Looking back: I added Reply All, Reply All Lite, and Matt Boers to my daily comic line up. I didn’t remove any this year…
Looking forward: …but am considering dropping Minimum Security depending on the January story line.
Entertainment
Looking back: I got hooked in to Netflix and Amazon Prime and have thoroughly enjoyed the content that each has created for their niche: House of Cards, Arrested Development, Orange is the New Black, and Alpha House.
I wish I would go to the movies more. I love movie theaters. I tried to take advantage of UCSB’s Arts and Lectures and appreciate the live performance experience.
Looking forward: I WILL finish Lost, dammit. Other TV ventures will be to watch Downton Abby, My Little Pony every Saturday morning with my kids, and consider a new series to binge watch.
Fitness
Looking back: I lost a gym, ambled aimlessly for 7 months, and found a gym. Unfortunately I only got to enjoy the new gym once this year. I recovered from my shoulder injury and incurred a spinal injury. I didn’t start using Map My Walk until May so these numbers don’t reflect the whole year: 114 workouts, 112 routes, 513 miles, 119 hours, 41,343 calories burned.
Looking forward: PT starts next week. The physical therapists are wizards so I have confidence that they will get me as well as I can be. I am a product of Disney mentality so I have a fantasy of a happy ending complete with spinning classes, yoga and swimming.
Food
Looking back: I tried to conquer loquats and feel up to the challenge come this April. The fruit is blossoming as I write this so I’ll be ready. I prepared lots of yummy things and think the only photos I upload to Instagram are food related.
Looking forward: I have 2 new cookbooks to spark some excitement in the year. Ottolenghi the cookbook, by Yotam Ottolenghi and Sami Tamimi will offer opportunities to search out new ingredients. Mollie Katzen’s The Heart of the Plate will take a spot to the other 4 cookbooks I have of hers. I’m curious what new spin she’ll have on her usual fare.
Parenthood
Looking back: I added this category in 2012. Parenthood is entertainment in itself and my kids are simultaneously pure joy and torment.
Looking forward: I will launch Daughter, she will become an ‘adult’ and I will adjust to this next phase of life.
Travel
Looking back: I added this category also in 2012. Alaska was indeed my highlight. I enjoyed Catalina and regret that I had to cancel our Death Valley trip.
Looking forward: Nothing on the horizon. I suppose if Daughter moves to Pittsburgh, that will be my travel destination for the next couple years.
Goodbye
I’m not sad to see 2013 leave. I can only look forward to better days.
